Pre-9/1/39 Materials

    Below are thumbnails of three items dated prior to the start of the war.  The first item is a postcard written April 22, 1934 by a Jewish inmate at Dachau to family members in Germany.  Text of the message acknowledges receipt of money, letters and cards.  The postcard is identified in Lordahl as type P3a and was used between April 1934 and October 1935.  The second is a a postcard postmarked August 17, 1938 by an inmate, Wolf Halm, at Dachau to family members in Vienna.  The postcard is identified in Lordahl as type P11 and was used between July 1938 and September 1935.  The third is an envelope from Dachau postmarked June 16, 1939.  The envelope is identified in Lordahl as type E8 and was used between December1938 and March 1940.  Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Pre-9/1/39" in the left frame to return.

   

Post 9/1/39 Materials

    Envelopes

     Below are thumbnails of three envelopes.  The first is a cover postmarked in 1941, from a prisoner, Boleslaus Skorupa.  The cover is identified in Lordahl as Type E9c with a Type C6a censor mark. The second cover is postmarked October 19, 1940, from a prisoner, Longin Literacki, to Litzmannstadt. The cover is identified in Lordahl as Type E9bb with a Type C7 censor mark.  The third cover is postmarked August 27, 1941, from a prisoner, Felix Nasrecki.  The cover is identified in Lordahl as Type E9e with a Type C6a censor mark.   The fourth cover is a Lordahl Type E9c and is postmarked March 12, 1941, from a Jewish prisoner, Richard Springer, to a relative in Vienna.     Folded Letters

    Below are thumbnails of a folded letter to Posen postmarked May 4, 1943 from a prisoner M.     Below are thumbnails of a folded letter from Januz Rafack to his wife at the Ravensbruck camp postmarked January 10, 1945. The folded letter is identified in Lordahl as Type F4ba with a Type C7 censor mark and a C1a Ravensbruck censor mark..     Postcards

      Below are thumbnails of the front and back of a postcard from an inmate at Dachau, Max Povolny, to Vienna, postmarked August 13, 1938.  This card is identified in Lordahl as Type P11 with a Type C4b censor mark.  This prisoner was sent later to Mauthausen (see Mauthausen).  Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Postcards" in the left frame to return.

 

   

    Other Materials
