Pforzheim, Germany

General

Pforzheim is a city in Baden, southwestern Germany.  The first reference to Jews in the town dates from the 13th century.  The community reached its peak in 1927 at about 1,000.  By 1933, the population had decreased to about 770.  The community was further depleted by emigration.  On October 22, 1940, 183 Jews were deported to the Gurs concentration camp.  Depicted in the postcard below is the synagogue of Pforzheim.  The synagogue was designed by Ludwig Adler and was finished in 1893.  In connection with Kristallnacht, the synagogue was desecrated and partly demolished.
