Prior to 1918, Slovakia was part of Hungary for almost 1,000 years. See Hungary for a description of this period. Except for the satellite state created by the Nazis in 1939-45, from 1918-93, Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia. See Czech Republic for a description of this period. The Czech Republic and Slovakia split on January 1, 1993. At that time, there were 3,000-3,700 Jews in Slovakia, most in Bratislava.
