Timisoara is a city in Transylvania, western Romania. Jews settled in the area during the 1600's. By 1930, the Jewish population was about 9,000 (10% of the total population). After the war, there were about 13,600 Jews in the city, but this number decreased through emigration, so that by 1971, about 3,000 Jews remained. Presently the Jewish population is estimated at about 900.
